Crusaders Sunday School Class
Sunday 9:45AM in Room 103
Crusaders are being led in a directed study of historic books in the Bible directly from the Bible since student materials are not yet prepared. Currently we are studying First Kings and expect to continue with Second Kings. We are blessed to see God's work steadily expressed through history rather than individual little happenings somehow separated in time.
The Crusaders Class was established in 1937 by Mrs. Fred T. Lanier and Mrs. Hubert Amason so that the younger adults in the church might have their own Sunday School
class, and both men and women could be in the same class. When the Crusaders became too large in class size, other classes like the Brunson-Simmons Class were spun off. But it is the Crusaders which continues today with folks aged from the thirties through age 101 - soon to be 102!
For years, the International Lessons were our source of study with teachers like Dr. Marvin S. Pittman, Dr. Georgia Watson, Jim Sharpe, Robert Morris, Ralph White, Bennie McCarty, Lee Cain, Steve Piazza, Hal Waters - to name a few. Currently, we are blessed to have Joel and Nancy Martin and Marcus Toole as our teachers. Marcus is now the leading teacher as we study directly from the Bible. But the Crusaders has long been known for its outreach.
In 1951 the Crusaders accepted monetary support for Scout Troop 332 as a project, which continues today. For years Mildred Parrish and Eulene Denmark visited every shut-in once a month taking each person some little gift so they would know they were not forgotten by their church. This ministry was incorporated into Helping Hands when organized by Alma Hopper in the 1980's. The Crusaders remember the death of each church member with a contribution to the building fund of the church.
Monthly donations are regularly made to the Food Bank, Back Pack Buddies, and Cafe 1040. Other ministries the Crusaders regularly suppy include UMCOR, the Vashti Center, the Methodist Home for Children, Magnolia Manor, Miss Ella's Camp at Epworth-by-the-Sea and Sara Melford's outreach here at home. Our hearts are ever ready to help out for special causes such as the Nepal earthquake. We also visit our classmates no longer able to attend on Sunday mornings and we usually get together for dinner during the Christmas season. We love to sing Christmas songs with Faye Smith playing the piano. We are blessed to have teachers so knowledgeable and willing to work with us as the Bible becomes a clearer source of how God has worked with people through all the ages to show them He truly cares for each person.
